Lamy urges much work ahead of trade meeting on Doha |

Top trade officials from the U.S., Europe, India, Brazil and other key World Trade Organization members will meet later this month to try and reach a deal on the Doha round. Ahead of those meetings beginning the week of July 20th, WTO Director General Pascual Lamy says, "maximum effort from everyone over the next few weeks," will ensure those meetings are productive.
According to Reuters, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says the Doha round could be completed by the end of this month. Others are less optimistic. Lula says the most difficult issues to work through are agriculture and industrial goods. The Doha round began in late 2001 with the goal of helping poor countries increase their exports and improve the global economy overall. After numerous missed deadlines over the years, the latest deadline for an agreement is the end of this year.
