| The United States has come a long way in the past 30 years to be a more environmentally friendly nation: that message from a keynote speaker at the U.S. Grains Council Meeting in New Orleans this week. David Sandalow, Guest Scholar for The Brookings Institute, formerly Executive VP of the World Wildlife Fund and Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans, Environment and Science for the Clinton Administration told members they should be proud of themselves for progress made in protecting the environment: “I think it is a huge success story that people don’t spend enough time talking about,” said Sandalow. The farm environment has been improved greatly over the course of the past 30 years.” Conservation practices such as no-till have helped improve the farm environment in the past 30 years. We have made big progress, and Sandalow said we have the ability when we focus on a problem and come together as a country to get it done. He said several presidents – both Democrat and Republican – have enforced the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act, signed by President Nixon some 30 years ago. Sandalow says there are 2 big environmental problems that we have not been able to get a handle on yet: Global warming and loss of species.
